How compression socks might save your life.

Do you ever sit for hours at a time or stand for prolonged periods of time that cause fatigue in the legs? This is true for more than half of the population and yet the side effects of these actions are not regularly discussed. Sitting or standing for numerous hours at a time can cause deep vein thrombosis or a pulmonary embolism which can become life-threatening. A deep vein thrombosis primarily forms a clot in the leg veins or pelvic veins and becomes life-threatening as the clot travels to the lungs where it becomes a pulmonary embolism.

How can compression socks save a life?

Compression socks form a secure and even pressure around the calf, ankles, and feet to reduce tension in the vascular wall of the legs which decreases blood from pooling into the lower extremities. Furthermore, when the blood from the upper extremities remains in the lower extremities and does not have the pressure from compression socks to relax the vascular wall, the blood will not travel back to the upper extremities as designed. A great example of this is when an individual sits and uses the restroom for at least ten minutes the legs will begin to tingle and eventually numb. Hence the circulation between the lower and upper extremities had ceased. Now, imagine a person sitting for three or more hours without a bathroom break or getting up for a refreshment. The lower extremities will hold onto a portion of the blood and will have difficulty getting the blood to recirculate once the person is moving again.

Immobilization pools blood which can turn into a blood clot also known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Once the human body is mobilized and the heart starts pumping both stronger and with greater haste, the DVT has the ability to travel up the leg and toward the lungs. When a DVT is discovered in time, healthcare professionals can intervene with hopes of successfully removing the clot. Please, save money by investing in compression socks now to reduce the risk or injury later.
